Methodology and Genealogy

Wednesday 18th November 2015

In this group lecture run by James Dyer, we looked into the topic of genealogies once more but this time more into the methodology that it holds and how one should be to go about using the process much better. In this session we delved into the knowledge of genealogies and their process'. Something that popped out the most to me during this lecture would be what James said about the best method of genealogies being where you should turn a family tree type set out upside down and work down from several ideas and come out in the end with one main idea out of the many.

The premise of a genealogy, if you looked at it subjectively, would be that you work best if you look at how an idea or movement came about in the first place, referring back to the tree in this way would mean looking at the very roots (beginning) of the idea and using those premises as influences. If no-one were to look into the very first steps of an art style or movement, they wouldn't know how to truly and properly use the style itself - at least not to its full extent that is. Looking at these roots, per say, is a good way of founding new styles of working as it may make your work seem much more original in a sense, in comparison to other work types.
