Self Negotiated Brief Introduction

Monday 7th March 2016

Concept / Aesthetics / Technique / Integration

In this Monday afternoon session, we were introduced to the final brief for our first year of Graphics. This brief is the most interesting to in my opinion - since it's slightly more free in what we can do with our ideas compared to the other briefs. In the session, we were run through the specifications of the brief and what needed to be done for each courses final designs for hand-in. Alongside this we were also given several references for use in the project, these were to be used to look into different layouts for the Graphic Design response - and other examples like publication ideas.

The task at hand for the Graphic Design course members is to; 'Create a special feature or supplement for a printed magazine, journal or publication. The particular title is open for you to choose. This could be a supplement for a mainstream title or it could be a one off/niche publication'. With this information, and looking at the brief, I had broken it down into the important details that I needed to take from the given information - prior to researching topic themes and ideas. These being;

- Minimum 16 page editorial - approximately A4 in size (can choose custom dimensions).
- Final article printed and bound - consider binding methods and paper stocks.
- Front & back cover, including title.
- Contents page and editors note (if appropriate to your type of publication).
- Your content (words & images) resolved through a series/sequence of double page spreads.
- Body of original visual research based on your negotiated subject themes.
- Evidence of thumbnail visuals and preliminary designs.
- Evidence of grid, layout, type, image selection and experimentation.
- Evidence of multiple solutions and design refinement
- Final outcome.

All of the above bullet points are what I will be taking into the brief and acknowledging as I go through the weeks given in time for the project. Through a process of elimination, or finding a strong idea right off the bat, I will explore all areas of the base idea and form proposals for the idea(s) - depending on how many I can come out with. Any research made will be both recorded on the blog and in a research document where all information is going to be stored throughout the brief.
