Sense of Place - People, Movement and Navigation

Friday 9th October 2015

For the next weekly focus of this 'A Sense of Place' brief, the task was set to research into the topics of People, Movement and Navigation. After looking into my idea and cross referencing this set of focuses with my plans for the brief, I thought it best to just indulge in the topics of Navigation and People for the most part - but Movement shall still be in with the rest of the research as I set out to find as much credible information that I can. After completing the first weekly focus, Grids, Frames, Macro and Micro - we move onto the following topics.

People

The section of this focus is being based around people and what influence it is that they have over the Sense of Place brief. A good photographer to reference for this topic would be that of Danny Santos, mainly because of his work in taking photographs of crowds and those in busy streets. As shown below you can see how in some of his crowd photographic work there are people being somewhat highlighted or having the attention taken away from the rest of the people and focusing on the one individual. This premise where one person is being shed light on - literally in this case, is something that is being brought into my brief but through different means of design. This would be developed across the brief through a variety of ways, mainly that of the people involved in the Syria crisis.

Navigation

After taking a look into the people that influence the section on, well, People. I moved onto research the next topic of the weekly focus - Navigation. In looking around the available information for this topic, I found an individual known as Harry Beck - someone that was picked up through a University lecture. Beck is known for his creation of the original London Underground map and has created somewhat of a trend for systems of the like around the globe, all creating their own iterations of such a design, as you can see by the images of his style provided below. The former Engineering Draftsman sparked an interest for this brief in me by giving my the idea of introducing his design style into my own iterations. This is to be achieved through a series of experimentation's of which will be created with block colour lines to form a map of an area - making this specific to my brief by creating such designs from Syrian cities or provinces, and experimenting with different imagery.

Movement

And finally, moving onto the topic of Movement as the final area to research for this weekly focus. Movement was somewhat more difficult in the sense that I was not too sure if I could fine some strong pieces of information for my research. After thinking about how Movement could be adapted into the brief I figured that animation and motion work is a good way of bringing it back into the brief as a stronger asset. Thus, I came across the motion group 'AXYZM', this group create works for many different advertisements using a series of movements and collaborating them together to create patterns in their clips. As you can see in the examples below, though the idea seems rather stretched, if i did experiment with it, it could prove for some interesting results for the brief's experiments.
